Do animals actually have personalities?

Animal personality, sometimes called behavioral syndromes or coping styles to avoid the loaded word, refers to individual differences in behavior that stay consistent across time and situations. This is measurable rather than impressionistic: researchers test the same individuals repeatedly and find that some are reliably bolder in novel environments, more exploratory, more aggressive, or more social than others of the same species, age, and sex. The trait most studied is the bold-shy axis, documented in fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, spiders, and cephalopods. Great tits have been studied across generations, showing that exploratory tendency is heritable and responds to selection.

The evolutionary question is why variation persists rather than converging on one optimal type, and the answer appears to be that different strategies win under different conditions. Bold individuals find food and mates faster and get eaten more often, so which type does better depends on predator density and resource availability, meaning fluctuating environments maintain the spread. This has real applied consequences: personality predicts which individuals disperse into new territory, which makes it relevant to invasive species management and to reintroduction programs, where releasing only bold animals can fail badly. It also matters for animal welfare and for shelter work, since temperament assessment attempts to predict how an individual will behave in a home rather than how the species behaves.
