Does cracking your knuckles cause arthritis?

The evidence is about as clear as evidence on a folk belief gets. Studies comparing habitual knuckle crackers with non-crackers have found no difference in rates of hand arthritis, and the most memorable one was conducted by a physician who cracked the knuckles of one hand at least twice daily for more than sixty years while leaving the other alone, then compared them by X-ray and found no arthritis in either. The belief appears to persist because the sound is unsettling and because arthritis is common enough that anyone can find a knuckle-cracking relative who has it.

The sound itself was debated for decades and was settled with real-time MRI. Pulling the joint apart drops the pressure in the synovial fluid, and a gas cavity forms suddenly, producing the pop. The cavity takes roughly twenty minutes to dissolve back into the fluid, which is why the same joint cannot be cracked again immediately. It is a pressure event in the fluid, not bones grinding or ligaments snapping.

Two caveats keep this honest. A small number of studies have associated habitual cracking with modestly reduced grip strength or hand swelling, findings that have not been consistently replicated and that describe minor effects rather than joint disease. And cracking that comes with pain, swelling, or loss of motion is not the benign version and warrants evaluation, since a joint that pops painfully can indicate a ligament or cartilage problem. The neck is a different matter: forceful self-manipulation of the cervical spine carries rare but documented risks that finger joints do not.

No. Multiple studies including one physician who cracked one hand for sixty years found no link. The sound is a gas bubble forming in joint fluid, which is why you cannot crack the same joint again for about twenty minutes.
