How do overdraft fees work, and how do you stop paying them?
An overdraft fee is what a bank charges for briefly lending you money you did not ask to borrow: a transaction clears against insufficient funds, the bank covers it, and historically billed around $35 for the favor, sometimes several times a day. The most useful fact is regulatory: since 2010, banks cannot charge overdraft fees on everyday debit card purchases and ATM withdrawals unless you affirmatively opted in. Decline the coverage and the card just declines, free, at the register, which for most people is strictly better than a fee.
Checks and autopayments can still overdraft regardless, so the full defense is layered: opt out of debit coverage, link savings as backup, which transfers for free or cheap at most banks, and turn on low-balance alerts. Also shop the bank itself; under regulatory and competitive pressure, many large banks cut fees to $10 or less, added grace cushions, or eliminated overdraft charges outright, and several online banks never had them. Paying $35 in 2026 is a choice the market no longer requires.
Overdraft coverage on debit purchases is optional: federal rules require you to opt in, so opt out and cards simply decline instead of charging $30. Better banks now cap, cushion, or killed the fee entirely.
