How do you pronounce GIF?

Top 100 most asked Great Debates

The origin story favors the soft G: Steve Wilhite, who created the format at CompuServe in 1987, always said JIF, his team joked about the peanut butter, and when accepting a Webby lifetime achievement award in 2013 his entire five-word acceptance speech, displayed on screen, was a declaration that it is pronounced JIF. The counterargument writes itself: G stands for Graphics, with a hard G, and English pronunciation is decided by speakers, not trademark-style decree; the person who coins a word gets no permanent veto, or we would all be saying Linux however Linus does.

The data has spoken. Large-scale surveys and dictionary usage notes find the hard G dominating among English speakers by a wide margin, and both Merriam-Webster and Oxford list both pronunciations as acceptable, hard G typically first.

Ruling: hard G, on the democratic principle that words belong to the people who use them. Wilhite's preference is noted for the record, with genuine affection, and overruled.

The format's creator insists on JIF, peanut butter and all, but usage surveys show the hard G winning decisively, and creators do not own pronunciation. Ruling: hard G, with respect to the inventor.
