How is a boxing match scored?

Professional boxing uses the ten-point must system: the judge must award ten points to the round's winner and nine or fewer to the loser. A round with a knockdown typically scores ten to eight, two knockdowns ten to seven, and a referee point deduction for fouls subtracts further. Judges assess each round independently on clean punching, effective aggression, ring generalship, and defense, with clean punching generally weighted most heavily. Three judges score separately, and their totals produce the decision: unanimous if all three agree, split if two favor one fighter, majority if two favor one and one scores a draw.

The round-by-round structure produces outcomes that surprise casual viewers. Because each round is scored as a discrete unit, dominating a few rounds overwhelmingly earns no more credit than winning them narrowly, so a fighter who wins seven close rounds beats one who wins five rounds decisively. This is why cumulative punch statistics frequently disagree with the official result, and why the advice to steal rounds late is tactically sound.

Judging controversy is a persistent feature rather than an occasional failure, and it stems partly from genuine subjectivity and partly from structural incentives in a sport with multiple sanctioning bodies and promoters who influence assignments. Reforms including open scoring, in which running totals are announced during the fight, have been tried in some jurisdictions and remain debated. Amateur and Olympic boxing has used different systems over time, including a computerized punch-counting system introduced after the 1988 Games and later abandoned in favor of a ten-point system closer to the professional one, following its own series of scoring scandals.
