How does the Electoral College actually work?
Americans do not directly elect the president. Each state gets electors equal to its congressional delegation, House seats plus two senators, totaling 538 nationwide with DC's three included. Win 270 and you win the presidency. In 48 states, the statewide popular-vote winner takes every elector; Maine and Nebraska split theirs partially by congressional district.
Winner-take-all is the load-bearing quirk. Winning a state by one vote pays identically to winning it by three million, so margins in safe states are wasted while a handful of competitive swing states decide everything, and candidates campaign accordingly. It also creates the famous outcome: five presidents have won the White House while losing the national popular vote, including in 2000 and 2016.
The electors themselves meet in December to formalize the result. Most states bind them by law, and the Supreme Court upheld those laws unanimously in 2020, so the faithless-elector drama is mostly retired.
You vote for electors, not the candidate: 538 total, 270 to win, awarded winner-take-all in 48 states. That math is how a candidate can lose the popular vote and still take the White House.
