How long do you boil eggs?
The most repeatable method starts with boiling water, not cold: lower fridge-cold eggs in gently, keep a modest boil, and set a timer. Six minutes gives a runny yolk, seven gives the jammy yolk that took over the internet, nine gives soft-set, and eleven gives a fully hard yolk with no gray ring.
The ice bath is not optional garnish. Moving eggs straight into ice water halts the cooking at your chosen minute and shrinks the egg slightly from the shell, which is most of the peeling battle. The other half: older eggs peel easier than farm-fresh ones, because the membrane loosens as eggs age.
The gray-green yolk ring means overcooked, a harmless sulfur-iron reaction, and the cure is simply pulling them sooner.
Lower eggs into already-boiling water: 7 minutes for jammy, 11 for fully hard. Then straight into ice water, which stops the cooking and makes peeling dramatically easier.
