How many calories should I eat a day?

Top 100 most asked Health & Body

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans put most adult women between 1,600 and 2,400 calories a day and most adult men between 2,000 and 3,000, with your spot in the range set by age, size, and how active you are. The 2,000-calorie figure on nutrition labels is a rounded reference average chosen for readability, not a personal prescription.

For weight loss, a moderate deficit of roughly 500 calories a day yields about a pound a week, and the guidelines advise women not to run below about 1,200 calories or men below 1,500 without medical supervision, because very low intakes tend to backfire on both nutrition and adherence.

Calorie needs also drop as you lose weight, which is the entirely normal reason progress slows; it is arithmetic, not failure.

The federal guidelines put most adult women at 1,600 to 2,400 calories and men at 2,000 to 3,000, depending on age and activity. The famous 2,000 is a label average, not your number.
