How do I build credit from nothing?

Top 1,000 most asked Money & Taxes

Two factors drive about 65 percent of a FICO score: paying on time and keeping balances low relative to limits. Everything else is tuning. So the starter plan is one account, used lightly, paid in full, forever.

If no one will issue you a regular card, use a secured card, where your own deposit sets the limit, or become an authorized user on a family member's old, well-paid card, which imports its history to your file. Put one small recurring charge on the card, a streaming subscription works, set autopay for the full balance, and stop thinking about it.

Expect a usable score within about six months of the first account opening and real strength in two to three years. Do not close your oldest card later; account age helps you, and closing it quietly shrinks both your history and your available credit.

Get one card, put a small recurring bill on it, pay in full every month, and keep the account open. On-time payments and low balances are 65 percent of your score.
