How do you jump start a car?
Park the working car close, both cars off, and connect in this order: red clamp to the dead battery's positive (+) terminal, red to the donor's positive, black to the donor's negative (-), and the final black clamp to unpainted metal on the dead car's engine block or frame, away from the battery. That last grounding point is the step people skip, and it exists because batteries vent hydrogen; you want any spark away from it.
Start the donor car, let it run a minute or two, then start the dead car. Once running, disconnect in exact reverse order, and drive the revived car 15 to 20 minutes so the alternator recharges the battery; shutting it off in the driveway often just schedules a rematch.
If the car needed a jump without an obvious cause like a dome light left on, get the battery tested, free at parts stores, since batteries average three to five years. And a $60 lithium jump pack in the trunk retires this entire ritual, cables, stranger, and all.
Red to dead positive, red to donor positive, black to donor negative, black to bare metal on the dead car, not its battery. Start the donor, wait a minute, start the dead car, then drive it 20 minutes.
