Is buy now, pay later a good idea?
Buy now, pay later splits a purchase into installments, classically four payments over six weeks, at zero interest if every payment lands. Used once, on a planned purchase, with autopay funded, it is genuinely free financing. The business model, though, prices in human behavior: late fees, overdrafts triggered by autopull timing, and the signature failure mode, stacking, five apps, five schedules, no unified statement, so no single lender sees your true exposure and neither do you.
CFPB research found BNPL borrowers disproportionately carry other high-interest debt and lower credit scores, which reframes the product: for stretched budgets it functions less like convenience and more like a debt on-ramp with great UX, now increasingly reported to credit bureaus, meaning missed payments follow you. The honest test is one question: would you buy this at full price today? If yes, BNPL is a cash-flow tool. If the installments are what make it feel affordable, that is the loan talking, and the answer was no.
Pay-in-four is a real loan wearing a checkout button. Zero interest if perfect, but late fees, overdrafts, and stacking across apps are where it bites, and regulators found users skew toward already-stretched borrowers.
