Are extended car warranties worth it?

An extended warranty is a vehicle service contract, and despite the name it is generally not a warranty from the manufacturer but a product sold by the dealer or a third-party administrator. Consumer Reports surveys have repeatedly found that a majority of buyers spend more on the contract than they receive in covered repairs, and that a substantial share never use it at all. That is the expected result, since the seller prices it to be profitable and adds a commission on top, frequently a large one negotiated at the finance desk.

The exclusions are where disappointment concentrates. Contracts typically exclude wear items, routine maintenance, and anything deemed pre-existing, and many require you to prove maintenance was performed on schedule with documentation, denying claims where records are incomplete. Third-party contracts may restrict which shops you can use, require pre-authorization before work begins, and pay the shop at a rate below its posted labor rate, leaving you the difference. Administrator solvency matters too, since a contract is only as good as the company behind it, and several have failed.

Where one can make sense: a vehicle with a documented record of expensive repairs, a model with known costly failures out of warranty, a buyer who cannot absorb a four-figure repair, or a manufacturer-backed contract bought at a negotiated price rather than the opening one. Manufacturer contracts are generally better than third-party ones and are negotiable, often substantially. Two practical points. The unsolicited calls and mailers about your vehicle's expiring warranty are a well-documented scam category and the FTC has brought enforcement actions over them, so those are not merely aggressive marketing. And for most buyers, setting the equivalent premium aside in a savings account and self-insuring produces a better expected outcome, with the money remaining yours if nothing breaks.
