Is sitting really the new smoking?

Top 100 most asked Health & Body

The catchphrase is an exaggeration that researchers themselves have pushed back on, since smoking's mortality impact dwarfs sitting's, and equating them trivializes tobacco. But the kernel is real: prolonged sedentary time is associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and early death, and studies suggest this holds somewhat independently of exercise, meaning a daily gym session does not fully cancel out eight uninterrupted hours in a chair.

The nuance that matters is that the enemy is stillness, not sitting per se. Research finds that breaking up sitting with brief movement, standing and walking a few minutes every half hour, blunts much of the metabolic harm, which is why the useful intervention is a timer and a lap around the office, not necessarily an expensive standing desk, which just trades sitting still for standing still. Large studies also show that people who hit recommended activity levels offset most of the sitting risk. The practical takeaway is boring and effective: move often, in small doses, all day, and do not let one good workout license eleven sedentary hours.

The slogan overstates it, smoking is far deadlier, but prolonged sitting is an independent health risk. The fix is not a standing desk, it is movement: breaking up sitting every 30 minutes matters more than total hours.
