Does stretching actually prevent injury?
The evidence on pre-exercise static stretching, holding a position for 30 seconds or more, is consistently underwhelming. Reviews have found little to no injury prevention benefit, and multiple studies show a short-term reduction in strength and power output afterward, meaningful enough that most strength and conditioning guidance moved away from it before activity. What replaced it is a dynamic warm-up: light aerobic work to raise muscle temperature followed by controlled movements through the ranges the activity will demand, which improves performance and appears more protective.
Where the injury-prevention evidence is genuinely strong is elsewhere. Progressive strength training, and eccentric work specifically, has substantial support for reducing muscle strain injuries, with Nordic hamstring exercises among the best-documented interventions in sports medicine. Load management, meaning not increasing training volume too quickly, is the other major factor. That does not make stretching worthless: flexibility and mobility work has value for range of motion, for activities that require it, and for people whose daily posture has restricted them, and static stretching after exercise or in a separate session is a reasonable way to pursue it. The correction is narrow and specific: stretching is not a warm-up, and it is not injury insurance, and treating it as either has crowded out the training that actually works.
Static stretching before exercise does not appear to prevent injury and can slightly reduce power output. A dynamic warm-up does more, and the strongest injury-prevention evidence points to progressive strength training rather than flexibility work.
