Do you need to warm up your car in winter?

Top 100 most asked Cars & Driving

The long warm-up is a habit inherited from carbureted engines, which genuinely needed several minutes to run properly in cold weather because carburetors could not adjust the fuel-air mixture for temperature. Fuel injection, standard on essentially every car built since the late 1980s, handles that automatically. Modern engines need roughly 30 seconds of idling to circulate oil, after which the fastest and healthiest way to bring the engine to operating temperature is to drive gently, since the engine warms far quicker under light load than sitting still.

Extended idling has real costs. It burns fuel while going nowhere, produces emissions that many jurisdictions restrict with anti-idling ordinances, and because a cold engine runs a richer mixture, prolonged idling can wash fuel past the cylinder walls and dilute the oil, which does not help longevity. The legitimate reasons to let a car run before driving are visibility and comfort, defrosting windows to a legally and practically safe state is not optional, and warming the cabin is a reasonable human preference. Electric vehicles flip the calculation, since preconditioning while plugged in uses grid power rather than battery range and improves both comfort and battery performance in the cold, making it the one case where warming up before departure is straightforwardly recommended.

Not for the engine. Modern fuel-injected cars need about 30 seconds before driving gently. Extended idling wastes fuel, adds pollution, and can accelerate engine wear. Warm it up only for your own comfort and to clear the windows.
