What does GOAT mean, and where did it come from?

GOAT stands for greatest of all time. The commonly cited origin is Lonnie Ali naming her husband's corporation G.O.A.T. Inc. in 1992, drawing on Muhammad Ali's decades of calling himself the greatest. The acronym moved into wider use through hip-hop, notably LL Cool J's 2000 album G.O.A.T., and became standard sports vocabulary through the 2010s as social media rewarded compact superlatives. The goat emoji accelerated it further by making the term visual and instantly legible.

The inversion is the interesting part. For most of the twentieth century, goat in sports meant the opposite: the player whose error cost the game, short for scapegoat, a usage that dates to at least the 1900s and attached itself to figures like Fred Merkle and Bill Buckner. A word that once marked the man who blew it now marks the best who ever lived, which is an unusually clean reversal. Worth noting that the phrase does real rhetorical work beyond praise, since GOAT debates are functionally arguments about which criteria matter, championships versus statistics versus era difficulty versus influence, and the disagreement is usually about the standard rather than about the athletes.
