Where does the word woke come from?

The term originates in African American Vernacular English, where woke functions as an adjective meaning alert or aware, particularly to racial injustice and systemic danger. The phrase stay woke is documented in Black cultural contexts well back into the 20th century, appearing in a 1938 Lead Belly recording about the Scottsboro Boys case, and it circulated in Black political and musical culture for decades before wider notice. It gained broad visibility during the 2014 Ferguson protests and the growth of Black Lives Matter, where stay woke served as a call to remain attentive to police violence and injustice.

What happened next is a well-documented pattern in language: rapid adoption outside the originating community, followed by semantic shift and then reversal. By the late 2010s the word had spread into general progressive usage, then was picked up by critics as a pejorative for progressive politics generally, and it now functions very differently depending on who is speaking, praise, self-deprecation, or insult, sometimes in the same conversation. Merriam-Webster added it with both senses noted.
