What is a high-yield savings account, and should you have one?

Top 100 most asked Money & Taxes

A high-yield savings account is an ordinary savings account that pays a competitive rate, typically offered by online banks and credit unions with lower overhead than branch networks. The FDIC insurance is identical, up to 250,000 dollars per depositor per institution per ownership category, and NCUA coverage applies equivalently at credit unions. The gap versus a traditional big-bank savings account is not marginal: national average savings rates have often sat near a fraction of a percent while high-yield accounts paid multiples of that, which on an emergency fund of any size is real money for a transfer that takes twenty minutes.

A few things to check before moving. Confirm FDIC or NCUA insurance directly rather than trusting a marketing page, particularly with fintech apps that are not themselves banks and hold deposits through partners, an arrangement whose failure modes became visible when one such intermediary collapsed and customers lost access to funds. Watch for teaser rates that drop after an introductory period, minimum balance requirements, and transfer delays, since money moving between institutions can take a few business days, which matters for a fund you may need quickly. Rates on these accounts float with the Federal Reserve's target, so they fall when rates fall. For money you will not touch for a fixed period, certificates of deposit or Treasury bills may pay more, and Treasury interest is exempt from state income tax, which is worth calculating in a high-tax state.

A savings account paying many times the national average, usually from an online bank with the same FDIC insurance. Moving an emergency fund from a big-bank account paying near zero is among the easiest financial upgrades available.
