What is a technical foul in basketball?

Top 10,000 most asked Sports & Fitness

A technical foul penalizes behavior rather than physical contact during play. Common causes include disputing calls in a manner officials deem excessive, profanity directed at an official, taunting an opponent, unnecessarily hanging on the rim, delay of game, calling a timeout when none remain, and having an incorrect number of players on the court. Unlike a personal foul, a technical does not require contact and can be assessed against coaches and bench personnel as well as players on the floor.

The penalty in the NBA is one free throw for the opposing team plus continued possession, which makes it costly in a close game. Two technicals in a single game result in automatic ejection, and accumulating technicals across a season triggers escalating fines and eventually one-game suspensions, which is why the running count is tracked publicly. College rules differ in the number of free throws and in how technicals interact with the personal foul count.

Two related categories sit alongside it. A flagrant foul involves excessive or unnecessary contact and is graded by severity, with the more serious grade carrying automatic ejection. A defensive three-second violation and certain other administrative infractions are technicals in name in some rulebooks. And the deliberate technical exists as a tactic, with coaches occasionally drawing one intentionally to protest a pattern of calls, fire up a team, or stop momentum, accepting the point and possession as the price. Officials also have discretion to warn rather than assess in many situations, which is why identical-looking complaints sometimes produce different results.

A foul for conduct rather than contact: arguing with officials, taunting, hanging on the rim, delay of game, or having too many players on the floor. It awards free throws and possession, and two in a game means ejection.
