What is AI, in plain English?

AI is software that learns patterns from data rather than following rules a programmer wrote out by hand. Show a system millions of labeled photos and it learns what cats look like; show it most of the written internet and it learns how language works. The learning happens by adjusting billions of internal numerical settings until the system's guesses match reality, a process called training.

The chatbots everyone now uses are large language models. At their core they predict the most plausible next word, over and over, which sounds trivial until you see that doing it well required absorbing grammar, facts, reasoning patterns, and style. That is also why they can be confidently wrong: they generate plausible text, and plausible is not the same as true.

AI is not conscious, not magic, and not one thing. It is statistics at a scale that produces behavior nobody fully predicted.
