Linear growth adds a fixed amount each period: ten more per day, every day. Exponential growth multiplies by a fixed factor each period, so the absolute increase grows along with the total. The distinguishing feature is a constant doubling time. A quantity growing 7 percent per period doubles roughly every ten periods regardless of how large it has become, which is the rule of 72 in another form. The early stages look unremarkable because the absolute numbers are small, and the late stages look explosive because the same percentage applied to a large base is a large number.

The classic illustration is the pond covered by lily pads that double daily and fill the pond on day thirty. The pond is half covered on day twenty-nine, and a quarter covered on day twenty-eight. Anyone glancing at it three days before the end sees an eighth of the surface occupied and reasonably concludes there is plenty of time. The wheat and chessboard problem makes the same point: one grain on the first square doubling each square exceeds global annual wheat production well before the board is finished.

This matters practically in several places. Compound interest works on savings and against debt by exactly this mechanism, which is why starting early dominates contributing more. Infectious disease spreads exponentially in an unconstrained population, which is why early intervention has outsized effects and why case counts that look manageable can become unmanageable within weeks. Population, computing capacity, and data volumes have all followed approximately exponential trajectories over long periods. Two important qualifications: nothing grows exponentially forever, since real processes hit resource limits and typically follow a logistic curve that flattens, and the word exponential is frequently misused in ordinary speech to mean merely fast or large, which drains it of the specific meaning that makes it useful.

Growth by a constant percentage rather than a constant amount, so the increase itself keeps increasing. Human intuition is linear, which is why exponential processes look slow and harmless right up until they do not.
