What is the difference between Wi-Fi and the internet?

They are two different things people use interchangeably. Wi-Fi is just the wireless technology that connects your devices to your router inside your home, a short-range radio link replacing an Ethernet cable. The internet is the vast global network of servers and connections your router reaches out to, delivered to your house by your internet service provider through a cable, fiber, or phone line. Wi-Fi carries your data across the room to the router; the internet is everything past that point.

This distinction is genuinely useful for troubleshooting, because the two fail independently. You can have a perfect, full-strength Wi-Fi connection while the internet is completely down, if your provider has an outage or the modem lost its signal, your devices connect to the router fine but nothing loads. Conversely, the internet can be working while your Wi-Fi is weak in a far room. When your connection dies, the diagnostic question is which layer broke: if other devices in the house also cannot get online, it is likely the internet or the modem (restart the modem, check for a provider outage); if only your device struggles or it improves when you move closer to the router, it is a Wi-Fi range or interference problem (a mesh system or better router placement helps). Restarting the modem and router, the classic unplug for 30 seconds, resolves a surprising share of both because it forces a fresh connection to your provider.
