Many scientists argue the Amazon in South America is actually longer, and the disagreement comes down to a deceptively hard question: where exactly does a river begin and end? Rivers have many tributaries feeding their headwaters, so deciding which distant stream counts as the true source, and where the river's mouth officially ends as it spreads into a wide delta or estuary, changes the measured length significantly.
