What was the Cold War?
The Cold War describes the geopolitical struggle between the United States and its allies and the Soviet Union and its allies, running from the aftermath of World War II until the Soviet Union dissolved in December 1991. It is called cold because the two principals never fought each other directly, a restraint enforced largely by nuclear weapons and the recognition that direct conflict risked mutual destruction. The competition instead ran through proxy wars, alliance building, economic and ideological rivalry, intelligence operations, and a technological race that included the space program.
The structure formed quickly. Europe divided between Western democracies and Soviet-aligned states, symbolized by the Iron Curtain and physically embodied in the Berlin Wall from 1961. The United States adopted containment as strategy, articulated in the Truman Doctrine and implemented through the Marshall Plan's economic aid and NATO's military alliance, met by the Warsaw Pact on the other side. The hot conflicts were fought elsewhere: Korea from 1950 to 1953, Vietnam through the 1960s and early 1970s, Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion in 1979, and numerous interventions and supported insurgencies across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
The closest approach to direct war came during the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, when the discovery of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba produced a thirteen-day standoff that was resolved through negotiation, including a secret agreement to remove American missiles from Turkey. The period also produced arms control agreements, periods of détente, and eventually the reforms under Gorbachev that loosened Soviet control over Eastern Europe. The revolutions of 1989 swept aside communist governments across the region, the Berlin Wall fell in November of that year, and the Soviet Union formally dissolved two years later. Its legacies remain visible in NATO's continued existence, the nuclear arsenals both sides retain, and the borders and grievances left across Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
