Was Cleopatra Egyptian?

Cleopatra VII belonged to the Ptolemaic dynasty, founded by Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general who took Egypt after Alexander the Great's death in 323 BCE. The family ruled for roughly 275 years while maintaining Greek as the court language, Greek customs, and extensive intermarriage within the dynasty. Ancient sources credit Cleopatra with being the first Ptolemaic ruler to learn the Egyptian language, and she was noted for speaking many others, which was a political skill in a multiethnic empire. She presented herself deliberately as a pharaoh in the Egyptian tradition and as the embodiment of Isis, which was a strategy for legitimacy rather than a statement of ancestry.

Her actual identity is less certain than either popular claim allows, because the ancestry of her mother and paternal grandmother is not documented, leaving genuine room for Egyptian or other non-Greek descent that historians cannot resolve. What is well established is that the modern arguments about her appearance import contemporary racial categories into a Hellenistic Mediterranean world that did not organize identity that way. The rest of the popular image deserves correction too: contemporary sources emphasized her intelligence, political skill, and voice rather than extraordinary beauty, Plutarch explicitly noting that her looks alone were not remarkable. Her reign ended in 30 BCE, and the asp story comes from later accounts that Roman writers themselves treated with uncertainty.
