Why do cats bring you dead animals?

Top 1,000 most asked Animals & Pets

The behavior most likely reflects the natural sequence by which cats teach hunting. Mother cats bring dead prey to kittens, then injured prey, then live prey, progressively transferring the skill. Household cats, particularly spayed females, appear to direct that instinct at their human companions, which has led to the popular framing that the cat thinks you are an inept hunter. That framing is anthropomorphic and unproven, though the underlying maternal-provisioning explanation is well supported. A second contributing factor is simpler: cats often carry prey to a safe, familiar location before eating or inspecting it, and your house is the safest place they know, so the kitchen floor is a cache rather than a present.

What is not in dispute is the scale of the predation, and this is where the answer stops being charming. Research published in Nature Communications estimated that free-ranging domestic cats in the United States kill billions of birds and small mammals annually, making them a significant driver of wildlife decline and a documented contributor to extinctions on islands. Bells on collars help only modestly. The interventions with real evidence behind them are keeping cats indoors, providing a catio or supervised outdoor access, and brightly colored collar covers that exploit birds' good color vision, which trials have found substantially reduce bird kills. Indoor cats also live considerably longer, which makes it the rare choice that favors both the wildlife and the animal.

The most supported explanation is instinct rather than gift-giving. Mother cats teach kittens to handle prey by bringing back dead or injured animals, and a spayed female treating your home as her den may be running that program on you.
