Why does Greenland look so huge on maps?

Greenland looks enormous, often appearing as large as Africa or all of South America, because of map distortion, specifically the Mercator projection that has dominated wall maps and, until recently, online maps. The core problem is unavoidable: the Earth is a sphere, and there is no way to flatten a sphere onto a rectangle without distorting something, so every flat map is a compromise that trades off accuracy in shape, area, distance, or direction. The Mercator projection, created in 1569 for navigation, preserves shapes and directions well (useful for sailors plotting straight-line courses), but it does so by dramatically stretching areas as you move away from the equator toward the poles. Land near the poles gets inflated enormously, while land near the equator stays closer to true size.

This is why Greenland, which sits way up near the North Pole, gets blown up to look gigantic, while equatorial Africa is shown relatively smaller than it really is. The reality is startling: Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland in actual area, roughly 11.7 million square miles versus about 836,000, but Mercator makes them look comparable. Similarly, Mercator shrinks the apparent size of equatorial regions and the countries of the Global South while enlarging Europe, North America, and Russia, which some critics argue subtly distorts our mental picture of the world and its proportions. It is not a conspiracy, just the mathematical consequence of that particular projection, but it is a real bias in how generations pictured the globe. Other projections make different tradeoffs (some preserve area accurately at the cost of distorting shapes), and tools that show true sizes, or simply looking at a globe, reveal how much smaller Greenland actually is. The lesson: no flat map is fully honest, and the familiar rectangular map lies specifically about size near the poles.
