How dangerous are sharks, really?

The numbers do not support the fear. The International Shark Attack File typically records fewer than a hundred unprovoked shark bites worldwide in a year, with fatalities usually in the single digits. For comparison, drowning, lightning, and the drive to the coast each kill vastly more people annually than sharks do. Of roughly 500 shark species, only a small handful, principally great white, tiger, and bull sharks, are involved in most serious incidents, and the leading explanation for many bites is mistaken identity or investigation rather than predation, since humans are not part of any shark's normal diet.

The relationship runs overwhelmingly the other direction. Estimates put human killing of sharks at tens of millions per year, driven by commercial fishing, bycatch, and the fin trade, and many shark populations have declined severely, with numerous species now threatened or endangered. That matters ecologically, because sharks are apex predators whose removal cascades through marine food webs. Sensible precautions still make sense: avoid swimming at dawn and dusk, stay out of murky water and away from fishing activity and baitfish schools, do not wear high-contrast shiny jewelry, and swim in groups. But the risk calculation belongs closer to lightning strikes than to any meaningful hazard of going in the ocean, and the animal in genuine danger in this relationship is not the human one.
