Do goldfish really have a three-second memory?

The three-second memory is folklore. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that goldfish form and retain memories for weeks to months: they learn to press levers for food, including at specific times of day, navigate mazes, distinguish shapes and colors, and, in one widely reported set of experiments, learned to associate a sound with feeding and responded to it months later. Research has also shown fish recognizing individual humans and learning to avoid a net after a single bad experience, which is exactly the kind of durable aversive learning a three-second memory would preclude.

The myth probably persists because it is convenient. A creature that forgets everything instantly cannot be bored, lonely, or badly housed, which makes a small bowl feel acceptable. The actual research points the other way and has fed a shift in animal welfare thinking about fish, including growing evidence that fish experience stress and possibly pain, and mounting recognition that the classic goldfish bowl is a poor environment, undersized, poorly oxygenated, and lacking any enrichment for an animal that demonstrably learns and explores. Goldfish also grow much larger and live far longer than most people expect when properly housed, with lifespans of a decade or more and records well beyond that, which is itself an argument that the small-bowl assumptions were wrong on several counts at once.
