Do you need a business license?
There is no single federal business license for most activities, so the requirements are layered and jurisdictional. Most cities and counties require a general business license or tax registration for anyone operating within them, including home-based and online businesses, and the fee is usually modest. Separately, your state may require a seller's permit if you sell taxable goods or services, professional licensing for regulated occupations such as contractors, cosmetologists, accountants, and health practitioners, and registration if you formed an entity. Certain industries require federal licensing, including firearms, alcohol, aviation, broadcasting, and transportation.
Home-based businesses are the group most likely to miss requirements, because operating from a residence feels informal. Zoning ordinances frequently restrict home occupations, limiting client visits, signage, employees on site, and commercial vehicle parking. Homeowners associations impose their own restrictions and enforce them. Food businesses face cottage food laws that vary dramatically by state on what can be made in a home kitchen and sold. Discovering these after signing a lease, buying equipment, or building a customer base is the expensive sequence.
How to find out what actually applies. The SBA maintains a license and permit lookup, and most states run a business one-stop portal listing state-level requirements. Then check your city and county separately, since local requirements are the ones most commonly missed and are not aggregated anywhere reliable. Call the relevant clerk's office and describe your specific activity rather than relying on a website, which is faster and more accurate for edge cases. Note also that operating without required licensing can void insurance coverage, prevent enforcing contracts in some jurisdictions, and generate penalties that exceed the license fee by orders of magnitude, so this is unglamorous work worth doing before opening rather than after.
Almost certainly something, and it is rarely one license. Most requirements are local: a general business license from your city or county, plus zoning approval, plus any professional or industry-specific permit, plus a state sales tax permit if you sell taxable goods.
