What actually determines your insurance rate?

Top 1,000 most asked Insurance

Insurers price by estimating the expected cost of claims from someone with your characteristics, which draws on a broader set of factors than most policyholders realize. For auto, that includes driving record, vehicle make and model and its repair and theft data, annual mileage, garaging ZIP code, coverage limits and deductibles, age and years licensed, and in most states a credit-based insurance score. For home, it includes construction type and age, roof age and material, distance to a fire station and hydrant, claims history on both you and the property, and again in most states credit.

Credit-based insurance scores are the factor most people do not know about and the one with the largest surprise effect. They are calculated differently from lending credit scores but draw on similar data, and studies including a Federal Trade Commission report have found them predictive of claims, which is the industry justification. Several states restrict or prohibit their use in insurance pricing, and the practice remains contested on fairness grounds precisely because it correlates with factors unrelated to how carefully someone drives or maintains a home. Where permitted, improving credit is a genuine lever on premiums.

Levers you can pull. Raising your deductible reduces premiums meaningfully and pairs sensibly with the reasoning about not filing small claims. Bundling home and auto commonly produces a double-digit discount. Continuous coverage history matters, so a lapse of even a few weeks can raise your rate for years, which is an argument against dropping coverage between vehicles. Ask specifically about discounts, which are numerous, poorly advertised, and frequently unapplied: defensive driving courses, low mileage, telematics programs, professional or alumni affiliations, security systems, new roofs, and paid-in-full or paperless billing. And shop the market every couple of years, since loyalty is often penalized rather than rewarded, a practice regulators in some jurisdictions have moved against.

More than your driving or claims record. Credit-based insurance scores, which several states restrict or ban, are a heavy factor in most states. So are ZIP code, coverage limits, and how long you have been continuously insured.
