How do you ask for a raise?

Prepare like it is a proposal, because it is. Assemble the record: what you have delivered since your last adjustment, in outcomes and numbers, scope you have absorbed, and any role changes that were never reflected in pay. Then research what the market pays for your role, level, and geography, using salary data, industry surveys, and posted ranges where transparency laws require them. Arrive with a specific number or narrow range rather than a vague ask, because a manager who has to guess what would satisfy you usually guesses low.

Timing and framing matter as much as the case. Ask for a dedicated meeting rather than raising it at the end of a one-on-one, and aim for when budgets are actually set, often well before annual review season, since by the time reviews happen the money is frequently allocated. Frame the request around value delivered and market rate, not personal expenses, which are not your employer's decision variable. Expect a no or a not now, and treat that as the start of negotiation: ask precisely what would need to be true and by when, get it in writing, and set a follow-up date. If the answer stays no while the market pays meaningfully more, that is information. The uncomfortable reality is that switching jobs still tends to produce larger raises than internal increases, which is exactly why a credible outside sense of your worth strengthens the internal conversation.

Build the case before the conversation: what you have delivered, what the market pays, and a specific number. Schedule it deliberately rather than raising it in passing, and time it to budget cycles, not to your frustration.
