Jurors are drawn from lists like voter registration and driver's license records, and a summons requires you to appear on the assigned date. You check in, wait, and may be called into a courtroom for voir dire, where the judge and attorneys question potential jurors about their backgrounds and ability to be impartial. Attorneys can remove jurors for cause, an actual reason they cannot be fair, or through a limited number of peremptory challenges without stated reason, though those cannot lawfully be used to exclude jurors based on race or sex. Many people who report are never seated and are released the same day. Employers are generally prohibited from firing or penalizing you for serving, and states vary on whether pay continues, with juror compensation itself typically nominal.

Excuses and deferrals exist and are handled by the court, not by ignoring the notice. Common grounds include documented medical conditions, being a primary caregiver without alternative care, extreme financial hardship, active military duty, being over a certain age in some jurisdictions, and recent prior service. Most courts allow a one-time postponement to a more convenient date, which is usually the easiest path if the timing is the problem. What does not work is skipping it: failure to appear can bring fines, additional summonses, or contempt proceedings depending on the jurisdiction, and trying to get struck by expressing extreme opinions during selection is both transparent to experienced judges and, if it involves lying under oath, a serious offense.
