How early should you get to the airport?
Two hours before a domestic departure, three before an international one. That is the airline-standard guidance, and it prices in the parts people forget: parking shuttles, bag-drop lines, terminal trains, and the walk to a far gate. Checked bags also have cutoffs, typically 45 minutes before domestic departures, after which the bag does not fly even if you would.
Adjust for reality: add time at mega-hubs and during holidays, Monday mornings, and summer Fridays. Subtract a little, maybe to 90 minutes, only when every condition breaks your way: carry-on only, PreCheck, boarding pass on your phone, an airport you know, an off-peak hour.
The asymmetry is the whole argument. Arriving early costs you thirty minutes with a coffee. Arriving late can cost the flight, the connection, and a rebooking fee, and gates close 10 to 15 minutes before departure regardless of how fast you ran.
Two hours before domestic flights, three before international. Yes, even with PreCheck, because the variable is not just security: it is parking, bag drop, and the terminal train you forgot existed.
