How long do dogs live?
Ten to thirteen years is the overall average, but the spread by size is the real story, and it runs backward from the rest of the animal kingdom: in dogs, smaller lives longer. Chihuahuas and toy poodles routinely reach 14 to 16, mid-size dogs land around 10 to 13, and giant breeds like Great Danes average roughly 8 to 10. Large UK-based studies of veterinary records also crown some smaller breeds and mixes among the longest-lived, with certain flat-faced breeds faring worst.
Why big dogs age faster is an active research question; accelerated growth and its cellular costs lead the hypotheses.
The lever owners actually control is weight: a landmark lifetime study of Labrador pairs found dogs kept lean lived about two years longer than their moderately overweight siblings, which makes portion control the cheapest longevity treatment in veterinary medicine. Dental care and keeping up with preventive vet visits round out the boring, effective list.
