Why do dogs tilt their heads?

Several explanations are plausible and they are not mutually exclusive. Sound localization is the leading one: dogs have mobile ear flaps and tilting adjusts the position of the ears relative to a sound, which may help pinpoint where it came from and pick out meaningful words from a stream of speech. Vision is the second: a long muzzle blocks part of a dog's lower visual field, so tilting the head can improve the view of a person's face, which matters because dogs read human facial expressions closely and depend on them for cues.

The most interesting evidence comes from a 2021 study of dogs learning the names of toys, which found that dogs classified as gifted word learners tilted their heads far more often than typical dogs when hearing familiar toy names, suggesting the tilt accompanies concentration and memory retrieval rather than just sensory adjustment. Social reinforcement almost certainly plays a role too, since head tilting reliably produces delighted human reactions, attention, and treats, and dogs are exceptionally good at learning which behaviors pay. Worth one caution: a persistent head tilt that is not tied to sounds or attention, especially with loss of balance, circling, or eye flicking, is a neurological or inner ear symptom and warrants a vet rather than admiration.
