How many cups are in a gallon?
Sixteen. The full US liquid ladder: 8 fluid ounces to a cup, 2 cups to a pint, 2 pints to a quart, 4 quarts to a gallon. So a gallon holds 4 quarts, 8 pints, 16 cups, or 128 fluid ounces, and half-gallons split all of those neatly in two.
A classic memory aid draws it: a big G containing four Q's, each Q containing two P's, each P containing two C's. Once seen, it is difficult to unsee, which is the point.
One caveat for readers of international recipes: this is the US gallon. The imperial gallon used historically in the UK is about 20 percent larger, with a 20-ounce pint to match, which is why a British pint of beer is a better deal and why old cookbook conversions occasionally sabotage a soup. When in doubt, metric measurements avoid the whole ancestral mess: a US gallon is about 3.785 liters.
