How do you get rid of ants for good?
Resist the spray. Killing visible ants eliminates a few expendable scouts while the colony, hundreds to thousands strong, keeps sending more. Worse, some species respond to spray die-offs by splitting into multiple colonies. The winning move is bait: slow-acting poison in a sweet or protein matrix that workers carry back and feed to the nest, queen included. Expect more ants at the bait at first; that is the plan working. Colonies typically collapse within one to two weeks.
While the bait works, wipe the ant trails with soapy water. Ants navigate by pheromone trails, and erasing the chemical highway stops recruitment to your counter. Then find and seal the entry point with caulk, and fix the attraction: crumbs, an unrinsed jar, standing water, pet food left out.
Persistent carpenter ants are a different matter, since they nest in wood, and earn a professional call.
