Is it bad to hold in a sneeze?
A sneeze is a genuinely violent event, air rushing out at speeds estimated up to 100 miles per hour, and stifling it completely reroutes that pressure back into your own head and chest. Most of the time nothing happens. But the medical literature carries documented case reports of the rare bad outcome: a ruptured eardrum, a torn throat, burst blood vessels in the eyes, and in one widely cited 2018 case, a man who pinched his nose and clamped his mouth tore his throat and spent days in the hospital.
The odds of injury are low, which is why this stays a myth-adjacent curiosity rather than a public health warning. Still, the risk-reward is lopsided: suppressing a sneeze buys you a quieter moment and gambles, slightly, against your eardrums. The safer move is to let it out and aim it into your elbow, which also does more for the people around you than a heroic silent stifle ever will.
Usually harmless, occasionally not. A sneeze moves air at highway speed, and pinching it fully shut has caused rare but real injuries, ruptured eardrums, throat tears, burst blood vessels. Let it out.
