Is it dangerous to sleep with your phone charging next to you?

Modern phones manage charging with temperature sensors and cut power when they get hot, and a phone charging on a nightstand poses negligible risk. The documented fire cases share a pattern: the phone or charger was buried under bedding, which trapped heat and prevented the cooling that the device's design assumes, or the charger was a counterfeit or uncertified unit lacking the protective circuitry that limits current and shuts down on fault. Frayed cables with exposed conductors are the third contributor. Fire departments in several countries have issued guidance specifically against charging under pillows.

The radiation concern is separate and does not hold up. Phones emit non-ionizing radiofrequency energy at levels regulated by the FCC and other agencies, and the large body of research has not established health effects at those exposures. Charging does not increase emissions; if anything, a phone on Wi-Fi with a strong signal transmits less than one hunting for a weak cellular connection. Airplane mode overnight reduces transmissions to zero and also silences notifications, which is the stronger argument for it.

What actually affects sleep is the screen and the notifications, not the electromagnetic field. Blue-enriched light delays melatonin, and the habit of checking a phone in bed extends wakefulness, so the useful advice is behavioral: charge it out of reach, use a real alarm clock, and enable a scheduled do-not-disturb. On battery health, keeping a phone at 100 percent for hours is mildly harder on the cell than stopping at 80, which is why both major platforms now offer optimized or limited charging that learns your schedule and delays the final portion until shortly before you wake.
