Are open offices actually better than cubicles?

Open plan offices were sold on collaboration, and the best available research found they reduce it. A Harvard study by Ethan Bernstein and Stephen Turban equipped employees with sensors before and after their organizations moved to open plans, and measured face-to-face interaction falling by roughly 70 percent while electronic messaging increased substantially. The interpretation the authors offered is that removing physical boundaries prompts people to construct psychological ones, headphones, avoided eye contact, and moving conversations to channels where they cannot be overheard. Additional research has linked open plans to higher reported stress, more sick days, and reduced satisfaction, with noise and lack of privacy the dominant complaints.

The honest counterweight is that cubicles were not the golden age either, and the research does not vindicate the beige maze of the 1990s. What the evidence supports is variety: quiet rooms and enclosed offices for focused work, open areas for genuinely collaborative tasks, and enough acoustic treatment that neither one leaks into the other. Cost is the reason open plan won, since it fits far more people per square foot, and that is a legitimate business consideration as long as it is stated honestly rather than dressed as a productivity strategy. The most defensible position is that layout matters less than control, and the consistent finding across workplace studies is that employees who can choose where and how to work do better than those assigned to any single arrangement.
