Is pet insurance worth it?
Pet insurance reimburses a percentage of veterinary costs after a deductible, typically 70 to 90 percent, and most policies work on reimbursement rather than direct payment, meaning you pay the vet and file for repayment. Accident-only policies are cheapest. Accident and illness policies are the common choice. Wellness add-ons covering routine care are generally poor value, since they amount to prepaying predictable expenses with an administrative markup.
The exclusions determine everything. Pre-existing conditions are excluded across the industry, and the definition is broad enough that a symptom noted in a record before coverage began can exclude the eventual diagnosis, which is why enrolling while an animal is young and healthy is the only way to get comprehensive coverage. Hereditary and congenital conditions may be excluded or covered depending on the policy, and breed-specific predispositions matter for exactly the animals most likely to need care. Waiting periods apply after enrollment, and some policies have longer waits for specific conditions such as cruciate ligament injuries. Premiums increase substantially as pets age, often faster than owners expect when they price a policy for a puppy.
The honest framework is the same as for any insurance: insure what you cannot absorb. Emergency veterinary care for a foreign body obstruction, a serious fracture, or cancer treatment routinely runs into the thousands and sometimes well beyond, and the reason it matters is that the alternative to paying is frequently euthanizing an otherwise treatable animal, a decision families make under financial pressure with real regularity. If you could write that check without hardship, self-insuring by saving the equivalent premium is defensible and keeps the money if you never need it. If you could not, insurance converts an unpredictable catastrophic cost into a predictable one. Compare policies on the annual limit, whether the deductible is per year or per condition, and whether reimbursement is based on the actual bill or a benefit schedule, which is the term that most often causes disappointment at claim time.
It depends on whether you could absorb a five thousand dollar emergency without borrowing. Pre-existing conditions are excluded and premiums rise sharply with age, so the decision is best made while the animal is young and healthy.
