Where's my tax refund?
Check the IRS Where's My Refund tool at irs.gov/refunds. It updates once a day, overnight, and shows three stages: return received, refund approved, refund sent. You need your Social Security number, filing status, and the exact refund amount.
Most e-filed returns with direct deposit pay out within 21 days. Paper returns take four weeks or more. Returns claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit are held until mid-February by law, so early filers in those categories wait longer no matter what.
Calling the IRS does not speed anything up, and the phone reps see the same status screen you do. If the tool says your refund was sent and it has been more than five days, check with your bank before starting a trace.
