Who built Stonehenge, and why?

Stonehenge was built in stages by farming communities in southern Britain over roughly fifteen centuries. The earliest phase, around 3000 BCE, was a circular earthwork ditch and bank containing cremation burials. The large sarsen stones, some weighing over 25 tons, were raised around 2500 BCE and came from about 15 miles away on the Marlborough Downs. The smaller bluestones travelled far further, transported roughly 150 miles from the Preseli Hills in Wales, which remains one of the most striking facts about the site and a subject of continuing research into how and why.

The persistent association with Druids is chronologically impossible. Druids were priests of Iron Age Celtic societies documented by Roman writers, active thousands of years after Stonehenge was completed, and the connection originates with antiquarian speculation in the 17th and 18th centuries rather than any evidence. Similarly, no evidence supports construction by Romans, Egyptians, or anyone from outside Britain.

Purpose is inferred rather than known. The monument is aligned so that the sun rises over the Heel Stone at the summer solstice and sets along the same axis at the winter solstice, and current thinking places more emphasis on the midwinter alignment, with evidence of large-scale feasting nearby at that time of year. Excavations have identified it as one of the largest known Neolithic burial sites in Britain, with cremated remains of at least 150 individuals. Isotope analysis of animal bones and human remains from the area shows people and livestock travelling from across Britain, suggesting the site served as a gathering place drawing communities over long distances. Theories about astronomical calculation, healing, and ancestral ceremony are not mutually exclusive, and the honest position is that the monument served multiple purposes that shifted across the many centuries of its use.
