Who was Genghis Khan?

Born Temujin around 1162, he rose from a fractured and impoverished childhood on the Mongolian steppe to unify the region's warring tribes, and in 1206 a council of Mongol leaders proclaimed him Genghis Khan, meaning universal ruler. His military system combined exceptional cavalry mobility, sophisticated intelligence gathering, psychological warfare, and organizational reforms that replaced tribal loyalties with units based on merit and decimal structure. Under his command and that of his successors, the empire expanded across China, Central Asia, Persia, and into Eastern Europe, ultimately becoming the largest contiguous land empire in history.

The human cost was immense. Cities that resisted were destroyed and populations massacred, a deliberate strategy that encouraged subsequent surrenders. Estimates of deaths from the Mongol conquests run into the tens of millions, and some regions took centuries to recover their populations and irrigation infrastructure. Historians debate the precise figures given the limitations of medieval sources, but the scale is not in dispute.

The same conquests produced consequences that are harder to categorize. The Pax Mongolica secured trade routes across Eurasia for roughly a century, allowing goods, technologies, and ideas to move between East and West with unprecedented safety, which is how Marco Polo traveled and how printing, gunpowder, and other technologies spread westward. Genghis Khan established a written script for Mongolian, a law code, a relay postal system, and unusual religious tolerance across his territories, along with meritocratic promotion within the military. He died in 1227, his burial place remains unknown, and the empire divided among his descendants into khanates that persisted for generations, one of which established the Yuan dynasty in China under his grandson Kublai Khan.
