Why do fighters weigh in the day before a fight?
Weigh-ins moved from fight day to roughly 24 hours prior starting in the 1980s, with the reasoning that a fighter who made weight hours before competing was dangerously depleted at the moment of maximum physical risk. The extra day allows rehydration and refeeding. The unintended consequence is now the dominant feature of the sport: because there is time to recover, fighters cut enormous amounts of water weight in the days before, often 10 to 20 pounds, then regain most of it before stepping in. A fighter listed at 155 pounds may enter the cage above 170.
This produces the outcome the change was meant to prevent. The dehydration itself is the danger, since severe fluid loss thins the protective cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and appears to raise the risk of serious injury from head trauma, and kidney damage from repeated extreme cuts is well documented. It also distorts competition, rewarding whoever can survive the worst cut rather than whoever is the better fighter at a genuine weight. Regulators have responded with hydration testing, more weight classes to shrink the gaps, and same-day check weights in some organizations, and several commissions and physicians have argued for returning to fight-day weigh-ins with adjusted classes.
To give them a day to rehydrate, which is exactly the problem. Same-day weigh-ins were replaced for safety, but the 24-hour gap enabled extreme water cutting, so fighters now enter the ring far heavier than their listed class.
