Why do cats knead with their paws?

Making biscuits begins at birth. Nursing kittens rhythmically press their mother's belly to stimulate milk flow, and the motion gets wired together with warmth, food, and safety. Adult cats carry the behavior forward, kneading soft blankets, favorite humans, and occasionally bare thighs when they feel maximally content, which is why it usually comes bundled with purring and a half-lidded stare.

Additional functions ride along: paw pads carry scent glands, so kneading marks the blanket, or you, as claimed territory; cats knead to soften bedding before settling, a habit with obvious wild ancestry; and some cats knead to self-soothe under mild stress.

So being kneaded is genuinely a compliment, delivered by an animal that categorizes you somewhere near mother and territory. If the claws are the problem, put a thick blanket in the landing zone or keep nails trimmed; punishing kneading confuses a cat doing the most affectionate thing it knows.
