Why do I need to keep updating my software?

The most important reason to update is security, and it is not optional in the way people treat it. Software has flaws, and when a security hole is discovered, the vendor releases a patch to close it, but the discovery is often public, meaning criminals immediately start attacking devices that have not updated yet. Many of the biggest cyberattacks and ransomware outbreaks in history spread specifically through computers running outdated, unpatched software, when a fix had been available for months. Every update you postpone potentially leaves a known, documented door unlocked, which is why security professionals say prompt updating is one of the highest-impact things an ordinary person can do to stay safe.

Updates do other things too: they fix bugs and crashes, improve performance and battery life, add features, and maintain compatibility with other apps and services that evolve around them. The annoyance is real, updates arrive at inconvenient times, occasionally change interfaces you liked, and very rarely introduce new problems, which is a legitimate reason big organizations test before deploying. But for an individual, the risk of updating is far smaller than the risk of not. The practical answer is to turn on automatic updates for your operating system, browser, and apps so security patches install without you having to remember, and to not run devices so old they no longer receive updates at all, since an unsupported phone or computer is a standing liability.
