Is being hangry a real thing?

Top 100 most asked People & Etiquette

Hangry is real enough to have been studied deliberately. The mechanism involves glucose: the brain consumes a disproportionate share of the body's energy and has limited storage, so when blood sugar drops, the prefrontal cortex, which handles impulse control and emotional regulation, is among the functions that suffer first. Hunger also triggers release of cortisol and adrenaline, stress hormones that heighten irritability. A study of married couples famously found that lower evening blood glucose predicted more aggressive behavior toward spouses, measured by how many pins participants stuck in a voodoo doll representing their partner, and a 2022 experience-sampling study following people through ordinary daily life found hunger significantly predicting anger, irritability, and reduced pleasure.

There is a cognitive layer on top of the physiology. Researchers have argued that hunger produces a general negative arousal that people then attribute to whatever is in front of them, so the coworker is not actually being unreasonable, your unattributed discomfort is looking for a cause. That has a practical implication: simply recognizing that you are hungry appears to blunt the effect, because labeling the internal state correctly stops it from being misattributed to the person you are talking to. The obvious interventions apply, regular meals with protein and fiber to avoid sharp glucose swings, and not scheduling difficult conversations or major decisions for the hour before dinner.

Yes, and it has been measured. Falling blood glucose impairs the brain regions that regulate impulse and emotion, and studies tracking people through daily life found hunger reliably predicting anger and irritability hours later.
