Why do humans cry emotional tears?

Humans produce three kinds of tears: basal tears that lubricate the eye constantly, reflex tears that flush irritants like onion vapor, and emotional tears, which appear to be uniquely human. No other species is known to weep from feeling. That uniqueness is the core of the leading explanation, which is social signaling: visible tears are a hard-to-fake, highly legible distress signal, and research consistently finds that faces with tears are judged as sadder and more in need of help, and that seeing them increases willingness to offer support. In a species that survives through cooperation, a reliable signal of need has clear value.

There is also evidence for a self-regulating function, though it is messier than the popular idea of crying flushing out stress hormones, a claim that rests on limited research. Better-supported work suggests crying can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is consistent with the calm many people feel afterward, and that the perceived benefit depends heavily on context, crying with a supportive person present tends to help while crying alone or in a shaming environment often does not. Emotional tears do differ chemically from reflex tears in composition. Crying is also strongly shaped by culture and gender expectations rather than biology alone, with substantial documented variation in how often people report crying across countries, which is worth remembering before drawing conclusions about anyone's emotional life from how much they weep.
